To our knowledge, this tenor in museum condition belongs to a limited series that the Beaugnier factory of France stenciled for a couple of brands including Vito. While drawing on their famed “Special Perfect” model and showing a strong Selmer influence, Beaugnier already put in place some features of the later “Modèle 38”: angled left hand pinky cluster, sculpted right hand pinky cluster, higher palm keys…. But beyond its indisputable historical value, this beautiful horn has really surprised us on all counts! The closest we can describe the way it feels and sounds is to compare it to a good 1970s Mark VI but with the huge low end of a Mk VII. Since it has yet to be truly broken in, we believe its tone would be most appreciated by a professional classical player, or suitable for an advanced versatile player who can’t afford a Selmer…unless a collector snatches it first!
